<description>How far the knowledge workers and data workers are satisfied with the organizational reward systems: an empirical study on twelve service organizations in Sri lanka
Rauf, Hansiya
This research aimed to study the effectiveness of the reward system, which will lead to&#13;
satisfaction and commitment among knowledge workers and data workers in the service&#13;
industry in Sri Lanka.&#13;
This research attempted to examine whether the knowledge workers and data workers&#13;
derive job satisfaction mainly from intrinsic rewards or extrinsic rewards and the&#13;
relationship between job satisfaction and commitment among the knowledge&#13;
workers&#13;
and data workers. To achieve the objectives three hypotheses were developed&#13;
for&#13;
testing. The study concluded that knowledge workers derive greater job&#13;
satisfaction&#13;
from intrinsic rewards tlxan extrinsic rewards while data workers derive greater job&#13;
satisfaction from extrinsic rewards than intrinsic rewards the study also concluded that&#13;
satisfaction followed&#13;
by intrinsic rewards is more correlated&#13;
with the level of&#13;
commitment than job satisfaction followed by extrinsic rewards for knowledge&#13;
workers&#13;
category, but could not say the same for data workers&#13;
category.&#13;
This study will be useful to identify the reward system, which will lead to a higher job&#13;
satisfaction and commitment among the knowledge workers and data workers. Findings&#13;
of this study will serve the organizations&#13;
to make suitable reward systems or take&#13;
corrective action in their motivational tools, which will assist them in reaching their corporate goals.

<title>Japanese style of team working: the unique way and characteristics</title>
<link>http://ir.lib.seu.ac.lk/handle/123456789/23</link>
<description>Japanese style of team working: the unique way and characteristics
Pathmaranjan, R
This paper analyses the teamwork system, which is one of the major element of Japanese&#13;
style of management.&#13;
Emergence of loosely&#13;
Structured Organization&#13;
(LSO) as a new&#13;
paradigm of work organization&#13;
in Japanese firms played a vital role in shaping the&#13;
teamwork system at planet level. The LSO consists of organic work organization and flat&#13;
management&#13;
organization&#13;
— the combination&#13;
was found as perfect match to the small&#13;
volume, multi-product,&#13;
lean production system which evolved with the diffusion of micro&#13;
electronic technology.&#13;
The primary objective of group work which was manifested in&#13;
such methods as quality control circles, zero defect system, self-managing&#13;
groups and&#13;
small group activities in 1960s and 1970s was to improve quality of products.&#13;
However&#13;
these practices of Japanese firms laid down the promoting conditions for team working&#13;
under new technology after 1980s. Team working is now considered as a natural way of&#13;
getting things done in Japanese factories. Indeed, the Japanese work organization&#13;
could&#13;
be recognized&#13;
as team working.&#13;
Assigning&#13;
work on one-team,&#13;
one-task&#13;
method,&#13;
developing&#13;
multi-skilled&#13;
workers, giving wider discretion to workers, maintaining&#13;
the&#13;
feeling of cohesiveness,&#13;
providing appropriate&#13;
training facilities,&#13;
sluiring&#13;
information&#13;
with planet level employees, and directing subordinates&#13;
with less control are some of the&#13;
important characteristics&#13;
of Japanese style of team working. A closer look into these&#13;
characteristics&#13;
makes the Japanese wav unique and forms the "Japan Model"&#13;
for&#13;
transformation&#13;
of industrial practices in other countries in this age of&#13;
globalization.

<title>Market response to behaviour of cash dividend in the Colombo stock exchange: an empirical analysis</title>
<link>http://ir.lib.seu.ac.lk/handle/123456789/22</link>
<description>Market response to behaviour of cash dividend in the Colombo stock exchange: an empirical analysis
Abdul Rauf
This research paper aimed to examine the impact of cash dividend behaviour&#13;
on&#13;
stock prices, and investigate&#13;
whether the Colombo Stock Exchange is semi strong&#13;
form efficient. To achieve the objectives hypothesis were developed for testing. The&#13;
sample included cash dividend announcements from 36 companies over a period of&#13;
eight years from&#13;
1995 to 2002.&#13;
The study has a sample&#13;
size of only&#13;
50&#13;
announcements&#13;
dates for this type of dividend announcement.&#13;
To investigate&#13;
the&#13;
stock market response&#13;
to cash dividend announcement&#13;
the standard event&#13;
study&#13;
methodology&#13;
is used. In this study an estimation of 100 days an event window of 21&#13;
days are used.&#13;
The analysis showed that, the Colombo Stock Exchange is not efficient in the semi&#13;
strong form sense. The study has found that the sudden changes&#13;
in&#13;
dividend&#13;
behaviour have higher significant impact on stock price than the constant level of&#13;
dividend&#13;
behaviour.&#13;
Since the results of this studv indicate&#13;
that the CSE is&#13;
informationally&#13;
inefficient&#13;
so it has important&#13;
implications&#13;
for the&#13;
investors,&#13;
management&#13;
of companies and the stock market regulatory agencies. The investors&#13;
could make use of the delayed reaction of cash dividend announcements&#13;
information&#13;
to make decisions with regard to changes (to buy or sell) they have to make their&#13;
portfolio&#13;
in order to make profits or avoid potential&#13;
losses. The Securities&#13;
and&#13;
Exchange Commission&#13;
of Sri Lanka could increase its monitoring activities on the&#13;
stock market to ensure that listed companies disseminate&#13;
important information&#13;
such&#13;
as cash dividend&#13;
timely and regularly.&#13;
This kind of research can motivate&#13;
the&#13;
development&#13;
of share market activities through an effort of finding ways and means&#13;
to earn better return by the investors of the Colombo Stock Market.

<title>Environmental reporting practices of the private sector business organizations in Sri Lanka</title>
<link>http://ir.lib.seu.ac.lk/handle/123456789/21</link>
<description>Environmental reporting practices of the private sector business organizations in Sri Lanka
Rajapakse, Bandara
During the past two decades&#13;
environmental&#13;
reporting&#13;
has received&#13;
increasing&#13;
attention in the literatures of accounting,&#13;
business management&#13;
and&#13;
environmental&#13;
law. Recent surveys on environmental&#13;
reporting suggest that, although the reporting&#13;
of firms'&#13;
impacts on the physical&#13;
environment&#13;
has dramatically&#13;
increased&#13;
the&#13;
existing environmental&#13;
reporting is found deficient and not of a standard to satisfy&#13;
the information&#13;
needs of various groups of report users. Tliis study involves an&#13;
evaluating of existing environmental&#13;
reporting practices&#13;
of private sector&#13;
business&#13;
organizations&#13;
in Sri Lanka.&#13;
The published annual reports for the financial year&#13;
1998/99 of randomly selected 123 quoted public companies&#13;
in Sri Lanka&#13;
were&#13;
reviewed. Study found tliat, existing environmental&#13;
reporting practices in Sri Lanka&#13;
is very narrow and does not provide material information&#13;
to users of financial&#13;
information.
