Society. The field of criticism in Tamil literature is being functioned in Sri Lanka
in the past as well as in the present, Particularly, Criticism of poetry is conducted
from time to time. Though it is observed that Sarumathy’s poetry did not reach the
field of the researches. This research is very much needed on his poetry. When
doing a research, we get a clear idea of the form, structure, content and aesthetic
sense. By considering the length of the poetry, the research is limited to the content
of the poetry. Introduction about the poet, Local politics, International politics,
labor problems and exploitation and the problems of women are considered in this
research. Sarumathy identifies himself as a Marxist and he seems to have a great
consideration for the society as a poet. Particularly, he is known as the voice of
the proletarians by participating in their demonstrations. It is observed that this
social view is reflecting in his poems. So this research is conducted on the social
view of his poetry. His poems are to be read under documentary and analysis
method. Most of his poems are politically related subjects. He had a deep sense of
observation not only in Sri Lankan politics but in the International politics too. He
had the one nation concept as all are Sri Lankans in the past. But later, after 1980s
he had changed this opinion due to ethnic suppression. This is an important subject
matter observed in his poem. His poems denote the violence against women and
laborers. Not only his poems mentioned about poverty, hunger and exploitation but
also searching the reasons for this. So it is observable that there are voices against
capitalist class. Most of the poems are based on his own emotions. Simple wording
and rural slangs add more beauty to his poems. It is believed by the Researcher
that this research will highlight the social view of Sarumathy’s poetry
