dc.description.abstract As a multi-disciplinary issue of controversy domestic violence has wide dimensions. Domestic violence is a social phenomenon which is related to the emotional, psychological and physical harm or suffering inflicted on women. It includes threats of deprivation of liberty and may take place in public or private life. In Sri Lankan law it does not clearly address domestic violence, despite its high prevalence in all sector of the society. Formally recognized as ‘family problems’ by state institutions such as the police. Cases that are reported to the Women’s and Children’s Desks at police stations are noted down, and followed up by issuing a warning to the husband. International human rights law was developed in order to protect individual from violation of their rights that may be dedicated by countries. One such area of violation which has raised concern is domestic violence against women, especially those who are living rural areas. So, it is moral issue in almost in rural areas of the Sri Lanka. General objective of this study is sought to evaluate and examine the problem of domestic violence in general and specifically detail its effect on women in the Coastal Area of the Ampara District of Sri Lanka. This research will be conducted in the coastal areas of Ampara district that includes six divisional areas. A sampling population of 600 families will be considered for study sample of 100 families will be drawn from each divisional area, drawing this sample would be representative of rich, poor, educated and uneducated families. The questionnaires containing open and close questions on domestic violence abuse, nature, its forms causes and remedial mechanisms were develop and administer. The questionnaires are either self-administered or through the face-to-face interview. The data will be edit and analysis with the aid of SPSS software programme. Descriptive statistics have to use in the analysis. Many regulatory controversial issue of Domestic Violence has wider dimensions and many forms of violence can result in emotionally and economically. It was the most controversial social, legal, psychological and moral problem in all parts of the research areas. en_US
