Abstract:
The community-based correction (CBC) for offenders is in practice in Sri Lanka according to the law
no. 46 enacted in 1999 in order to be subjected to the wrongdoer under the community correction laws
than the imprisonment with the view to make them better citizens of Sri Lanka. However, the
familiarity and significance of the law is lacking. Therefore, this study is to explore the development
of the CBC laws and the challenges in applying the laws to the convicts. For this study, primary and
secondary data were collected from various sources. Direct observation, interview and questionnaire
administration were used to collect primary data. Records and statistical reports from Kalmunai
Magistrate court has been used as the secondary source. The result shows the CBC application in the
society is an efficient method rather that the imprisonment but the familiarity and the significance
should be disseminated among the societies with proper mechanis.
