dc.description.abstract The most important growing problem in the world is wasting materials which happens as a result of improper management and not having the activity of removing waste materials. Solid waste management means collecting, treating, and disposing of solid material that is discarded because it has served its purpose or is no longer useful. Improper disposal of municipal solid waste can create unsanitary conditions, and these conditions in turn can lead to environmental pollution. Sri Lanka generates 7000MT of solid waste per day with the Western Province accounting for nearly 60% of waste generation. Each person generates an average of 1-0.4kg of waste per day. According to the Waste Management Authority and the Central Environmental Authority, only half of the waste generated is collected. This research was based on Sainthamaruthu DS Division and the prime objective of this study was to analyze the solid waste problems and its environmental impact. In this study, various methods were used for data collection. Primary data were collected through questionnaires, interviews with key informants and observation. Secondary data were collected from Divisional Secretariat, previously conducted studies, books, publications, journal articles, reports, internet and other relevant documents. As conclusion of this study many problems were identified and remedial measures were suggested to overcome those problems. en_US
