Abstract:
Rice is the main food of the people and it occupies the largest part of land in Sri Lanka. Paddy is cultivated in nearly all parts of the country, except at very high altitudes. In which Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Hambantota and Batticaloa districts highly contribute to Sri Lankan economy. The economy of Batticaloa district depends mostly on agriculture and fishing for livelihood. In Batticaloa, distribution of total population by the settlement is around urban 407,974 and rural 586,601. Approximately 69 percentage of the population lives in rural areas and the paddy sector offers employment opportunities for rural laborers in Batticaloa districts. Increasing the local production of paddy is the key objective of every government. Hence, Sri Lankan government also has been supporting paddy sector to increase paddy yield since its independence. in this context the study aims to analyze the trend of paddy production in Batticaloa district. For this purpose, secondary data were collected from divisional secretariat Batticaloa district, Department of Agriculture Land Central bank annual report. The result of the study showed that the data for Batticaloa district does not explain a clear trend during the period of 1994/1995-2013/2014.It reveals that in Batticaloa district, Paddy cultivation has been experiencing fluctuation trend continuously.
