The challenge faced on studying Sinhala as second language: a research based on the 3rd year students of faculty of arts and culture, south eastern university of Sri Lanka.

Abstract

Language is seen as a means of communicating ideas and an excellent tool for thinking. Although languages such as Sinhala, Tamil, and English are spoken in Sri Lanka, Sinhala is the majority people's language and the official language. According to that, students face numerous challenges when learning Sinhala as a second language. The purpose of this research is to identify these challenges and present solutions to them. This research is based on quantitative and qualitative research methods using the first and second data sources. The questionnaire provided primary data, while previous research, books, and the internet provided secondary data. Google Form and Excel are used for analysis. The survey has found that students face difficulties in speaking, writing and reading the Sinhala language and has presented some suggestions for them.
