Abstract:
Morphology is one of the most important areas in the field of the Arabic language like other languages.
It is found in the Arabic language as the only criterion to understand the changes in the words. In
addition, it also clarifies the word structure in the sentence and links between the sentences. Today,
Morphology is taught as one of the primary subjects to students in most of the Arabic colleges in Sri
Lanka. But, still traditional teaching approaches are used in teaching morphology in Arabic colleges.
As a result, most of the students are facing difficulties in learning Morphology, further, they hate
learning Morphology. As such, there is a strong need to identify the reasons behind the student’s
unwillingness in learning Morphology, to identify the problems faced by students in learning
Morphology and by teachers in teaching Morphology and to assess the present Morphology teaching
approaches. Therefore, the present study is mainly focusing on above issues and trying to propose a
novel teaching and learning approach for Morphology. The study is planned to conduct in the selected
Arabic colleges in Batticaloa district. For this purpose, 50 students randomly selected from 05 Arabic
colleges. The pre-tested structured questionnaire is used to collect information from them. In addition,
10 Morphology teaching teachers from selected Arabic colleges randomly selected and subjected to
personal face to face interviews to collect information from them. Descriptive and analytic techniques
are used to collect data. Microsoft Excel is used to analyze and interpret the data. The study revealed
that the contents of Morphology syllabus used at present are unsuitable for students and the teaching
methodology is centered on only the syllabus, as a result difficulties are faced by students in learning
Morphology. In addition, students are struggling to understand the morphology text books as they are
complex in nature.
