Today, the state-of-the-art of technologies are playing a notable role in designing, constructing, and maintaining smart cities. Hence, the application of modern technologies in smart cities addresses various problems, for instance safety, security, transport, health care, waste management, environmental issues, etc. Although the applications of big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) in smart cities accelerate many prospects, a widespread study that covers the applications and their subsequent challenges in smart cities is lacking in the existing literature. Reviewing the existing literature exposes that a great deal of attention is paid to the applications of big data, AI and IoT in smart city development, yet a broad discussion on these technologies’ characteristics, usage, applications, and challenges in smart cities are still required. The main contribution of this chapter is that it offers a systematic evaluation and synthesis, of the critical applications and challenges of modern big data, AI, and IoT in smart city development. This chapter proposes an applied conceptually designed prototype that integrates the key domains, technologies, platforms, and architecture for the expansion of the smart city.en_US
