dc.description.abstract | This study titled “the factors detrimental to development of self-employment of women” is carried out on the basis of Olaithoduvai Grama Niladhari Division within the Mannar Divisional Secretariat. 52 self-employed women are used as sample size in this study. The aim of this study is to find out the factors of obstacles affecting the women to engage in self-employment, to encourage womenentrepreneurs in Mannar district, and to find out the reasons why most of the women engage in the traditional employments rather than engaging in the modern employment techniques. In comparison to early time period, the women currently engage in their individual employments. Though the women are physically weaker than the men, they are mentally strengthened. At present, the women tolerate not only the burden of their family but the economic burden of their family as well after their marriage rather than just being domesticated. The self-employment generates the selfconfidence of women. The self-employment is an activity which increases the livelihood of women and which alleviates the existing poverty from the women. However, the women engaging in the selfemployment activities particularly in the rural areas face the private, family, social, economic and technological challenges to development their self-employment activities. | en_US |
