Abstract: Livelihood of the people is a means of securing the necessities of life.Sustainable livelihood means, livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from the stresses and shocks and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both now and in the future without undermining the natural resource base. It depended on every individual who develop their livelihood with the fundamental things such as natural, social, physical, human, financial and capital. In Sri Lanka after the war there are many development project implemented for the development of the peoples life. Any how it is a controversy whether these projects implemented in a right time or right place according to the people needs. The north and east people livelihood is very complicated. In that the livelihood of the Gayathiri village people under the Thirukkovil Divisional Secretariat of Ampara is in a backward position. In this village the huge number of families are without the basic needs. They face issues in their employment, shelter, transport, water and other infrastructure facilities. In their day to day life their facing lot of livelihood problems. So the Research Problem is why the Gayathiri village people are facing the livelihood related problems until now and also why their facing lot of difficulties in developing their livelihood.(G.S division, Thirukkovil). In this manner the objective of this research is identifying the livelihoodnatureof the Gayathiri village, the problems face by the Gayathiri village people, reasons behind these issues and the recommendation to these issues. The Data was collected in a qualitative method. It was collected from primary and secondary sources. Primary data was collected from the interview, observation and focus group discussion. Secondary data was collected from the books, newspaper and internet sources. Although the main livelihood activities of the Gayathiri village people are Chena cultivation, small scale cultivation and selfemployment, the people in this village area are facing lot of challenges in their main livelihood activities. So the Sri Lankan government should implement the livelihood projects that should reach the needy, suitable and appropriate people to improve their livelihood.
