Abstract: In recent years, it has been emphasized that teachers should consider the diverse learning needs of students in the classroom, like student-centered teaching in the teaching and learning process. The main purpose of this study is to find out the perception of teachers towards fulfilling the needs of diverse learners in their learning and teaching process. The study employed a survey research design using a quantitative approach. The sample for the study was selected from 3 educational divisions in Batticaloa central Education Zone. A total of 50 out 200 teachers who teach social sciences subjects, were selected as the sample of the study. Questionnaires were used to collect data, which were analyzed in terms of percentages. Based on the data collected, the majority of teachers accepted that diverse learning needs of students were available in their classrooms. Though many teachers had positive opinions towards diverse learners needs, many of them (58%) stated that it was difficult to teach the students with diverse learning needs in the same classrooms and they (86%) believed it would be a burden to other students if they accommodated learners with diverse needs in a classroom. It may be because of their lack of awareness and training on diverse learners’ needs and inclusive education. Therefore, it is recommended to include trainings on diverse learners’ needs and inclusive education in their in-service training.
