Abstract: This study fully embraces qualitative methodology with the aim of reviewing previous theoretical and empirical literature on social exclusion and identifying research gap from them. Secondary data collection sources such as published books, magazines, research articles and website documents have been used in this study. Findings were analyzed using descriptive analysis and illustrated as statements and figures. Through theoretical studies the definition of social exclusion, multidimensionality and symptoms of social exclusion and through empirical studies the experiences of social exclusion faced by the countries of the world have been identified. Also, it was learn in this study that the indicators that measure social exclusion and the challenges in applying them may vary according to the nature of the society or the country. The study also found that social exclusion is closely related to poverty, rural areas, and crime, and there is a link between some concepts such as social inclusion, social integration, and social cohesion. However, the fact that very little research has been done on social exclusion in Sri Lanka is also identified as a gap for future studies.
